At the heart of a blended learning environment, including flipped learning environments, is an organization and resource repository that is accessible 24/7. While the teacher is not expected to be present the entirety of this time, the system has to be up and running with all the latest. It also has to be a place where students can interact with each other and other members of the learning community at his/her own convenience. This is where the selection of the Learning Management System comes into play.
These systems have been around for a good number of years, but many were cumbersome and/or expensive. As my time in educational technology increases, I am noticing that a great deal of the expensive systems are still in play and have not evolved with the fervor that a software/tech company should adapt. Many have lost out on the innovation that has permeated teaching since technophiles have brought them into their classrooms. Two contenders in the K12 arena stick out…Edmodo and Schoology. Both are equals in the playing field…and both are free. As many loyal followers and seminar participants have heard, I love Schoology as a Learning Management System. If you are using multimedia (videos) in your teaching or flipped classroom, Schoology is able to handle the raw video file and eliminate the YouTube posting and linking. However, Edmodo should not be discounted because I said I like one over the other…check them both out!
For those looking to start using an online system or those that just want to learn more…here are some videos from Schoology that will help you get started or enhance your skill set.
